According to the 2006 Census:
There are 10,430 renter households in core need, i.e., paying more than 30% of income on shelter. The median income of these households in 2005 was $20,591.
Of those renter households in core need, 3,495 were considered at-risk of homelessness because they are paying more than 50% of their household income on shelter. The median income of these households was $15,831 in 2005. 32% of these households included children, while 47% are one-person households.
There are 7,043 social housing units in the City of Surrey. As of February 2009, there were 983 applicants on the Housing Registry operated by BC Housing. Of those 983 households:
- 533 were families with children
- 160 were seniors
- 145 were persons with disabilities
- 47 were singles
